Fragile X Syndrome and Its Relationship to Autism

 Friday, December 9, 2011

Presenter: Laurie Yankowitz, Ed.D., Senior Director of Family Support Services at HeartShare Human Services of NY

Dr. Yankowitz will discuss the importance of understanding the person and identification of strategies to address those characteristics to increase productivity and leisure activities, and to improve sociability and sense of overall well-being.

Dr. Yankowitz first became interested in Fragile X Syndrome when she recognized the symptoms in a young man, who was a participant in a program she was supervising, and based on a talk she heard. The change in the young man as a result of the strategies she had learned about were dramatically positive. She was inspired to return to graduate school and educate others about this special population.

Mentored by Vicki Sudhalter, Ph.D., Dr. Yankowitz received financial support from the National Fragile X Foundation and from Teachers College, Columbia University, for her dissertation research. Since being awarded her doctorate in Special Education with a focus on Intellectual Disabilities/Autism, she has been invited to present on a range of topics related to Fragile X Syndrome, including the use of app technology, transition services, and adult services. As part of her work as Senior Director of Family Support Services at HeartShare Human Services of NY, Dr. Yankowitz provides information and referral about Fragile X, conducts staff in-service training, and consults to families and schools.
